Project Proposal

Over the last few years more and more people are becoming aware of the corruption in large corporations and governments. Huge companies like Facebook, Apple and Google collect their customers personal information, track their location and read their messages. Governments have also increased CCTV surveillance which means that a lot of people feel they are losing their privacy in the real world and online. Decreasing a persons amount of privacy (whether they know they are being watched or not) forces them to behave more appropriately and in the way that we have been told to behave. In my opinion people are slowly being turned into machines, they are not being themselves and are scared to do what they want. In this project I would like to focus on the people out there who feel that they are free speakers and thinkers and find out what makes them feel free and what they do to fight repression.

I have been looking at artists and photographers like Jean Michel Basquait who transferred his energy from the street into high end gallery work,  Jim Goldberg who spent years with young homeless junkies on the street creating a huge narrative that runs throughout his book, and Roger Perry who documented Londons graffiti. I have chosen to research these artists because in my opinion all their work includes aspects of liberation and freedom, or repression and imprisonment.
